April is National Volunteer Month, but with COVID-19 restrictions, many volunteer organizations have canceled in-person opportunities or stricken in-person volunteer opportunities. So how do you continue with your corporate philanthropy and supporting your local communities during a global pandemic? Here at MES, we believe in supporting those in need and giving back to our local communities, especially during times like these. While many of our local charities closed in-person events, we continue to find ways to give back. One of those ways was supporting the PBJ Helpers of Columbus. An organization that helps the food insecure, homeless and addicted in Columbus, Ohio. They support the Jordan Rieser Legacy Foundation’s ongoing needs, including sandwiches, cookies, materials, and donations for the community.

Our team spent an afternoon making PBJ sandwiches for the charity, which turned out to be a fantastic team bonding event. Several assembly stations were set up for the employees, including one for peanut butter spreading, jelly spreading, packaging sandwiches into individual baggies, and placing wrapped sandwiches into overpack boxes for transportation. Sandwiches were immediately dropped off at PBJ Helpers to dropped off at a local food shelter the following day. Another excellent volunteer event our team participated in this month was helping the YWCA.

YMCA of Columbus – MES Prepares Food & Delivers Meals

While the YWCA has limited its in-person volunteer events, it won’t stop MES from continuing our continued support. This month, we cooked meals, purchased milk, fruit, salad, and other groceries to support this great cause. We typically serve our prepared meals, but this year is a little different. Whether we’re serving food or dropping off perishable items, we’re committed to continuing our support for the YWCA of Columbus. They are committed to creating a community of safety, support, and stability through emergency shelter and long-term supportive housing. They help community members who have suffered setbacks preserve their sense of self-worth without fear or deprivation, so women and their families have access to housing, education, and employment. Along with helping their community, the YWCA is dedicated to confronting uncomfortable truths about prejudice and poverty — because the only way to rise above our challenges is to go through them. They do this by initiating dialogs, convening allies to share resources and insights, and bringing bias to light so we can see each other’s value more clearly.
